Terror Comes in the Shape Of Summertime Footwear

I know that the Viet Cong managed to win a war wearing flip-flops. I know that people fly in them, go to ballgames in them, get married in them, work, run and sword fight in them. Lindsay Davenport wore them on Letterman. People even shop in them.

But I have this problem: On my feet they don't flip . . . they don't flop . . . they flounder. Recently, I had an ordeal in a giant Lower Manhattan outlet store that was more like a barbarian convention than a retail site. Huns, Goths, Vikings, Mongols, Saxons, Tartars, even Kipchaks and Kambojas (everybody is somebody else's barbarian) by the thousands slithered, shoved, lugged, looted and pillaged their way through the place, competing for clothes at alleged if doubtful wholesale. The vast majority of this mob happily churned onward in the ubiquitous rubber-thonged footwear, utterly fearless and unconscious. You could hear the music of the flopping -- SNAP, POP, CRACK, SQUEAK -- as the rubber hit the road. It seemed never to occur to them that someone might step on their toes or they might stub those same toes or that their traction might yield, depositing them, with sundered tendons, into an undignified position.

I cannot even make it to the bathroom in them. Stairways are out of the question -- outside a horror. Driving? How can you drive in them? Slippage has to occur, and you'll kill yourself and all who are in the 7-Eleven into which you smash.

Running, fighting, even moving briskly as if an important destination lay ahead? All inconceivable.

In fact, my wife -- one of the world's great flip-floppers -- does an extremely amusing imitation of me in flagrante: Imagine a golem with concrete knees and cast-iron boots, stomping through petunias, all heavy metal, rivets and rust, crushing clumsily all that comes before. I'm just not a flip-flop kind of guy.

Where did they come from? Weren't they first called shower shoes? I seem to remember them in locker rooms first, or upstairs at the dorm. For a while they were more or less seen as a part of hippie culture, a first cousin to the sandal. They knew their place then.

Yet somehow, like the little guerrillas who waged war so efficiently they could defeat our guys in the cool rubberized jungle boots the Army began issuing about year three of the Vietnam War, the shower thong won out. It infiltrated, it insinuated, it seduced, it tunneled, it presumed. Now, kids wear them to the White House.

My problem is part psychological. I fear pain. Feet out in the world are terribly vulnerable. Look at them: little genius-level miracles of engineering, with their delicate web work of linkages and hydraulics, superbly flexible, able to propel a fellow out of a saber-tooth tiger's leap or to a mile-relay state championship. You'd risk them? Boy, I sure can't.

Another cool thing about feet: They look real good in shoes. Me, I like a big English brogue, pebble-grained, the color of old mahogany. Or those butterscotch-y Alden tasseled loafers, proportions perfect, tone rich and traditional. Or New Balance sneaks, festooned with weird glittery grommets, strange space-age exoskeletons and that brilliant "N" that announces itself to the world. Why risk the ability to wear such treasures by endangering your feet?

And part of it is biological, the genetic play of variation and inheritance in the birthing game. It so happens I have thin feet. No other part of me is thin, but the feet are like the talons of a sparrow, bony and fragile and the color of some dead creature's belly; moreover, veins and arteries seem locked in some kind of purple Laocoönesque struggle for dominance just under the delicate skin.
I cannot even bear to look at them, and showing them to the world seems sinful.

Thin feet mean the rubber thongs have no place against which to bind or adhere. The darned things -- particularly on a forward thrust of a step -- keep slipping off and suddenly I'm barefoot, a pretty frightening way to discover the true nature of the surface of the planet (it has a lot of sticky, protuberant things). To compensate for this slipping-off tendency, I flex my toes to provide some grippage. Big mistake, but I cannot order my body to do otherwise; it seems like natural self-preservation. And of course in just a little while, my calf muscles begin to cramp and ache. The thing turns quickly to ordeal, then to fatigue and finally torture.

"Relax your toes," my wife says.

"I can't," I say.

"You must achieve separation between heel and sole; for the system to work, it must both flip and flop."

"It hurts."

"You're a baby."

"Possibly true, but it still hurts."

A couple of methodologies have been employed. For example, I have tried to pin the heel of the flip-flop under the heel of my foot on each step, thereby freeing my toes of "slip-off anxiety," as I have named the syndrome, and figuring that they would accept the concept and relax of their own. Like many a theory, it looked good on paper but in reality, it didn't pan out. My toes act as if they've been taken over by a secret cabal with its own agenda.

Of course I'm not facing the real problem. It's not physical or biological or even psychological, it's conceptual. And that is, I don't believe in feet.

We live, you have certainly observed but perhaps not processed, in a foot-rich culture. Feet are everywhere. The naked foot, once as taboo as a breast or a set of buttocks, has become commonplace, particularly in the summer, and I have to ask: Is this really such a good thing?

Indeed yes, a young woman's well-tended feet, as displayed in flip-flops or sandals or peep-toe heels or even bare upon the floor or sand, can be a treat. Smooth, streamlined, dainty, they are part of a woman's beauty and so should be respected or adored, as part of the ancillary menu of sexual attributes. And I presume that many women would find a male athlete's foot -- muscular, square, speaking of power and determination -- an ancillary pleasure in their admiration of the male frame, as they do strong, big hands, ripped arms, good posture, broad shoulders and so forth.

But what a price we pay for this occasional shiver of pleasure. The feet that you see today, my own being No. 1 on the Public Enemies list: old feet, gnarly feet. Toes twisted like an adulterer's lies, nails as yellow as a Kansas wheat field announcing to the world the presence of a demon fungus. Tectonic ranges of ragged nails, some offering harbor to filth. (I'm making myself sick!) What about the opposite of skinny feet, those fat things, like huge, flat slugs?

Really, when you think of it, that thing we call civilization is in one sense the march of the shoe. The 300 years from 1600 to 1900 might be called the crusade of the shod against the unshod. Others may call it imperialism, colonialism, even genocidalism, but whatever, it was the hubris of the West that things went better if people wore shoes (and of course, it goes without saying, socks). You might call it the War of the Toeses: We industrialized nations of the world, in our search for markets, raw materials and obedience, had to get the little people in Buster Browns, dang it.

Thus, it's no surprise that the flip-flop profusion began in the counterculture. And so, like other insidious usurpers of the West -- rock-and-roll, sexuality, annoying concepts of freedom and self-expression, fluoridation of water -- they subversively wiggled their way into dominance, disguised under feel-good rubrics like "comfort" and "freedom."

And so now we have what we have, and we can never go back. But you won't ever find me joining in the mob. Oh, and what was I shopping for at that huge awful Lower Manhattan place?
Socks.

Riding on the coattails of O.Liver Twist's tix to WPGC 95.5's BIRTHDAY BASH 2009 was fairly fun.

Some of the acts were great. Especially DC's own - WHAT Band and Busta Rhymes.

But being out as a patron and not as a performer brought to mind a singular realization:

I AM A GIG SNOB.

Performing in clubs and venues every other night has made me slightly elitist about the whole 'being in the audience thing'. I mean, I fucking LOVE our audiences. I appreciate anyone who comes to see MLC and I have an even greater appreciation for something I was kinda forgetting: audience issues. Plus, I LOVE a good party as much as the next, but there are some KEY differences when it comes to being in the audience versus being on stage that I felt obligated to make note of:

I don't care about Gucci's Bandana. Initially I might have cared, but after the 4th replay I decided I don't. I really, really don't.

A group of any people produce a lot of heat.

I do not, in fact, wanna see a bunch of chicks....

[a] drop down or

[b]get their eagle on.

My money is MY money. I won't ever make it rain on an audience. It just smacks of bribery.

People don't spill drinks on your lime kicks when you're behind the drums.

Rock events tend to use trash receptacles. Hip hop events tend to use the floor as the trash.

As O.Liver returns from yet another business trip to his hometown of Brooklyn, I wonder what's up with native New Yorkers and their beef with PERSONAL and POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS.

There are seven possessive pronouns in modern English: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, and theirs, plus the rarely used possessive pronoun thy/thine.

There are seven personal pronouns in modern English: I, you, he, she, it, we, they. Plus inflected forms such as me, my, mine, etc.

Talk to most New Yorkers [specifically Borough New Yorkers] and you'll notice that they rarely use any of these.

It's never "my mother said..." \ it's always "Mommy said..."

Plus, of the three major 'articles' in English grammer [the, a, an] many New Yorkers have a strong aversion to those as well.

It's never "pick me up from the Port Authority..." \ it's always "pick me up from Port Authority...".

It's never "I'm going to the Marcy Housing Complex to check on my people..." \ instead, it's always "I'm going to Marcy...".

Can any New Yorker explain to me...WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

NASCAR is certainly an acquired taste. And we’ve certainly acquired it over here.

The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 [September 6th] is considered the last race of the regular season. The next ten races after that are colloquially known as the CHASE.

This Race for the Chase is one of the best parts of NASCAR. But since nobody EVER seems to know what the heck we’re talking about when we start talking racing, we thought it best to provide a little explanation.

You know, like a public service.

You are so welcome.

[Q] WHAT ARE THEY CHASING EXACTLY?

[A] A damn trophy. Financial benefits aside [and there are MANY in NASCAR], isn’t ‘the trophy’ the thing all athletes are after?

In case you’re wondering, the trophy has a name. It’s called the SPRINT CUP.

[Q] IS THERE A CELL PHONE IN THE CUP?

[A] Uh…we doubt it. The history of the aforementioned cup goes a little something like this:

Back in the early days of NASCAR – when most of the tracks were dirt and drivers drove there in the same car they were soon to race in – the ‘Cup Series’ was known as the STRICKLY STOCK SERIES.

As more tracks were paved, and more races run, the series was renamed the GRAND NATIONAL SERIES.

From 1971 to 2003 – when cigarettes ruled the world – RJ Reynolds had the entire series on lock. Thus we had the era of the WINSTON CUP SERIES. Until…

2003 when Nextel took over sponsorship, and [obviously] renamed the whole thing the NEXTEL CUP SERIES [duh]. But Nextel’s notoriety was short-lived because…

... in 2007 Nextel merged with Sprint and apparently lost the ‘name-change’ coin toss thereby reincarnating the series into the SPRINT CUP SERIES we all know and love today.

[Q] IS SERIES LIKE CEREAL?

[A] Not really. Though we do love our cereal as much as the next dude.

[Q] So about the SERIES…?

[A] NASCAR affiliates itself with three clusters of races. These clusters are called SERIES.

SERIES #1 : THE NATIONWIDE SERIES

Evidenced by their somewhat low-brow names –such as the Kroger 200 and the Heluva Good 200- these 30+ races are considered [by some, not us] as the baby brother to the more fly and flashy SPRINT CUP SERIES.

Haters abound - even in NASCAR country- so the so-called ‘BUSCHWACKER’ controversy promotes the theory that the Nationwide Series is/should be strictly for the less well-known, newer, younger, or less experienced drivers. These naysayer’s claim that allowing the big name Sprint Cup drivers into the Nationwide Series takes focus and opportunity away from the regular Nationwide contenders. But big names bring exposure, experience, notoriety, and TELEVISION CAMERAS to the Nationwide races, se we suppose it’s a draw.

SERIES #2 : THE CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES

These races use modified production pickup trucks instead of the traditional stock cars. Craftsman, who’s been sponsoring the series since its inception, recently announced that they would no longer be footing the bill after the 2008 season…I guess now is the point where we should start holding our breath.

SERIES #3 : THE SPRINT CUP SERIES

In this BIG DADDY of all NASCAR hubbub, NASCAR runs 40+ races for the entire cup series. The race prior to the last ten races [this year its the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 as I've managed to 'product place' into this article several times already] is designated as the cut off, after which, the drivers with the top twelve scores [called points] are considered contenders in the CHASE.

The last ten races are the actual CHASE. Whichever driver has the most points at the conclusion of the tenth race is officially declared the SPRINT CUP Champion. Hooray rite?!!

[Q] WHAT’S THE POINT WITH THE CHASE POINTS?

[A] Drivers accumulate points for various reasons during the regular season, the most notable reason being [of course] a win. NASCAR and its detractors have a long and often tumultuous relationship regarding their points systems. [In case you care, since 1949, the points system has been modified or outright changed no less than 12 times]. But the basic premise goes like this:

1. Once the 12 ‘CHASE DRIVERS’ are determined, everybody’s points are reset to 5000.

2. Added to the 5000 points, each driver gets 10 bonus points for each race won they [already] won in the regular season.

3. During the 10 race CHASE normal scoring rules apply – and the points for each of these races are added to the 5000 plus points of each driver.

4. Whichever driver has the most points at the end of the ten races…WINS!

[Q] SO WHO’S GOING TO THE DANCE?

[A] We won’t know officially until the last regular season race [Chevy Rock & Roll 400] is run on Saturday, September 6, 2008. But here’s what the numbers say so far:

Swizz Beatz Kills Rap

Questions regarding the Swizz Beatz single "It's Me, Snitches":

how does frequent Swizz client and sample-source Jay-Z feel about Swizz constantly repeating that he's sitting in his car and listening to a song that brutally eviscerates Jay? I mean, I know Jay and Nas are best friends now and everything, but I still get the idea that Jay would like to pretend that "Ether" never existed.

He probably doesn't like being reminded every time he hears "It's Me, Snitches."

Also: why does Swizz keep trying to make "Ether" rhyme with "Beamer"? It doesn't. It doesn't even come close.

And did Swizz exhaust himself so completely coming up with his two quick little nonsense verses that he just couldn't manage to write any more? Is that why he just repeats those two verses twice? Or is it an aesthetic decision? Is it the old Ramones "third verse, same as the first" thing? If it is an aesthetic decision, why does it work so well? I haven't heard "It's Me, Snitches" in a club yet; when I do, is my face going to explode? Why does he want us to call him the Sandman? Doesn't the Sandman put people to sleep? This song definitely does not put me to sleep. And perhaps the most important question about the new Swizz Beatz single "It's Me, Snitches": What the fuck?

Maybe everyone doesn't quite agree with this, but I'd say that most of us have long accepted that a great rap single doesn't necessarily have to include great rapping, not if the beat and hooks and moment all converge in the right ways. But I can't remember another time when a great rap single actively resisted great rapping, or even average rapping, the way "It's Me, Snitches" does.

The track's real title is "It's Me, Bitches," but this is one of those songs where the radio edit trumps the original, in this case because it adds an even more absurdist bend to an already absurd song, and that's why I'm going to keep calling it "Snitches" instead of "Bitches."

Why would Swizz be talking to snitches and identifying himself? There's no reason. There's no reason for any of it.

Swizz doesn't quite rap on the song; instead, he plays hypeman for his own ridiculously frantic track. When two of his lines rhyme, it almost seems like an accident, and he's definitely not talking about a damn thing. And the track doesn't really leave any room for him to say anything even if he wanted to say something. The churning strings and enormous drums and weird fast-forward noises and siren-howls are so insane and overwhelming that anyone who tried to do any actual rapping would just get trapped in the mix. If the song is about anything, it's about its own massive physical force and the adrenaline-surge it triggers. The track's best moment comes at the end, when Swizz stops talking altogether and lets his own quick little amped-up scratch-solo take over, adding one more neck-snapping ingredient to the mix. If "It's Me, Snitches" has any real precedent, it's probably a rap-by-association party track like DJ Kool's "Let Me Clear My Throat," which of course was just a quick little succession of samples, all selected and sequenced for maximum impact, with DJ Kool yelling over the whole mess. "It's Me, Snitches" is, if anything, even more euphorically nuts.

In its insanity, "It's Me, Snitches" is also a profoundly rational move in a climate where the tracks with the most brain-meltingly simple lyrics are the ones that stand out the most; think "Chicken Noodle Soup" or "This Is Why I'm Hot." By repeating their simplistic hooks over and over and over, those songs manage to worm their way into our collective head and stay there for at least a couple of weeks. "It's Me, Snitches" does the same thing. I laughed the first time I heard the song; it just seemed like a dumb little throwaway club-track,

and it took me a few weeks to figure out how completely it's managed to infiltrate my brain. I'll be listening to Panda Bear or something and realize that I don't hear the music at all, that my brain just keeps repeating "Chillin' in my Beamer / Listening to 'Ether'" at me so loudly that it pushes all other music out.

At this exact moment, I think a DJ could probably just play "It's Me, Snitches" over and over again for hours and nobody at the party would complain, at least not if they were drunk enough.

With a track like "This is Why I'm Hot," there's

always a vague impression that a real rapper could always come in and steal the song away from Mims with minimal effort; that's why every mixtape rapper in America spent the entire first half of 2005 rapping over nothing but the instrumentals from The Documentary.

It's also the reason why the all-star remix sequels to middling club-tracks like "We Fly High" and "Make It Rain" can be so exciting.

The idea is that a great instrumental can always be improved with better rapping.

That idea doesn't work with "It's Me, Snitches." A remix of the song leaked out to the internet a couple of days ago, and it's even more of a dizzy mess than the original, except this time not in a good way. The remix features Lil Wayne and R. Kelly and Jadakiss,

but the only one who really comes out of it with the top of his head intact is Kelly, the one guy who isn't actually a rapper, and he mostly just survives by doing his wordless epic fantasy-movie wail on the calm-before-the-storm quiet bit.

Wayne has been on a dazzling tear for a year and a half now, but the song just utterly rips him out of his comfort zone even as he tries to disappear further into it.

Wayne starts it out using his new fake-Jamaican voice,

and he falls off the beat repeatedly. Later, he tries out rapping in French and gets a couple of nice little lines in, but Swizz still steals his own verse away from him just by ad-libbing hypeman bullshit over everything. Jadakiss doesn't even try to keep up with the song, only showing his face when it inexplicably turns into "C.R.E.A.M.," a much slower song and one that doesn't comfortably mix with "It's Me" at all. Every version I've heard of the remix fades in just a couple of lines into Jada's verse, so I don't know if it keeps going or not. "It's Me" is a big song, and rappers are probably going to keep try rapping over it, but I'll be amazed if any of them succeeds in making an impression. "It's Me" makes the rapping part of rap pretty much irrelevant, and I think that might even be a good thing.

People always (always, always, please stop with the clichés, always!) say that ‘Life is Too Short’.

Yet, ‘beating-dead-horses’ 'straw', and ‘brokeback-camels’ aside, folks who subscribe to this ‘train of thought’ really do see both the ‘forest and the trees’ because they understand -- probably, right in the ‘nick of time’ – that any day could be that ‘here’-day that your ‘buck stops’ at. (Okay, that was fun, but I’m done. Honest.)

The paradoxical irony of life is that (for those of us who actually choose to actively participate in it), the precise moment that life starts to makes some sense; starts to gain some order; starts getting put into some sort of perspective –is also the precise moment that you wholly and fundamentally grasp the inescapable truthfulness of it all:

Time is running out.
Your bell really can (and will) be rung –without warning- at any time.

Life truly is too short.

At least for the dumb shit.

People literally waste their entire lives standing passively (or passive-aggressively) by waiting for Life, or the Universe, or Santa Clause, or , hell I don’t know, Vinny Testaverde to simply hand them a set of instructions on how to adapt to life (for more information on How To Raise Your Kids Properly – see: page 541). And it’s those same people, who – when they take another look around- realize in breathtaking amazement that now they’re too old, or too unwilling to change, or too dead from getting hit in the head by a flying flatbed trailer to make any difference to anyone or anything.

Figure out who the hell you are and go be that. Figure out what you want to believe in and go believe that. Find something (anything) that you want to do and (for the love of all that’s holy) go DO IT.

Stop frontin’. Stop playin’. Stop bullshittin’. Stop hatin’.

And keep your ingratitude and negativity to yourself. Stop wasting everybody’s time (including your own) with your whole self-loathing, woe-is-me, reality bites agenda. Reality indeed bites, yet bearing that in mind, some of us (still) actually take this stuff seriously.
